Please include the following specifiation language in all projects.

Where required for protection of workmen, public safety, or as required by State laws, substantial barricades shall be provided for the areas where excavation, trenching, construction and demolition work is being performed. Safety Barricades shall not be used in lieu of required guard rails on temporary bridges crossing trenches, excavations or other openings. For protection of the Visually Impaired, safety barricades shall be joined together with 3" yellow Caution tape as follows:

a.	One strand of tape running continuous from barricade to barricade at 42" above grade or mounting level.
b.	One strand of tape running continuous from barricade to barricade at a height of from 4" to 12" above grade or mounting level.

2.	In addition battery-operated warning lights shall be maintained on such barricades, whenever visibility is restricted, and at night.

1.	Pursuant to Labor Code 6705 and 6707, the Contractor shall include in his base bid all costs incidental to the provision of adequate sheeting, shoring, bracing or equivalent method for the protection of life or limb, which shall conform to applicable Federal and State Safety Orders.
2.	Before beginning any excavation 5' or more in depth, contractor shall submit to owner's representative a detailed plan showing the design of shoring, bracing, sloping, or other provisions to be made for worker protection from the hazard of caving ground during excavation. The proposed plan shall comply with the standards established by the State of California Construction Safety Orders and Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations (CCR). If the detailed plan varies from such shoring system standards, it shall be prepared by a registered civil or structural engineer whose name and registration number shall be indicated on the Drawing. If a dispute arises as to whether the plan must be prepared by a registered civil or structural engineer, owner's representative's determination of the matter shall be final and conclusive on contractor. The cost of required engineering services shall be borne by contractor and shall be deemed to have been included in the amount bid for the work as stated in the agreement.
3.	Neither the review nor approval of any plan showing the design of shoring, bracing, sloping, or other provisions for worker protection, shall relieve contractor from its obligation to comply with Construction Safety Order Standards and Title 24 California Code of Regulations (CCR) for the design and construction of such protective work, and contractor shall indemnify owner and owner's representative from any and all claims, liability, costs, actions, and causes of action arising out of or related to the failure of such protective systems. Contractor shall defend owner, its officers, employees, and agents and owner's representative in any litigation or proceeding brought with respect to the failure of such protective systems.
4.	Contractors must still comply with the State o California Construction Safety Orders, Article 6 - Excavations, Trenches, Earthwork. The requirements of Article 6 apply whether the excavation, trench or earthwork is less than 5', or 5' or more.

The above TRENCHING AND EXCAVATING paragraphs are structured for a normal building. If extensive excavation, shoring, or protection of existing building(s) is required, the paragraphs may be modified. Modifications should be transmitted to the project manager who will then transmit the documents to General Counsel for review.
